The portable torch comprises a flat rectangular box (5) incorporating the lamp and battery. The box is carried on straps worn by the user. Two straps (1) are each attached to the box by their two ends, such that they pass over the shoulders of the user and around the user's back. Four pivoting attachments (2) are provided to fasten the four strap ends to the outside of the torch box. A back plate (3) is used to retain the straps in position and holds them together at the point where they cross over on the user's back. Four adjusting loops (4) are provided for altering the length of the straps. Specific fittings are provided for retaining the ends of the straps, such that they can be removed when required, but can also be locked in position when the torch is in use.
