Wool is dyed by padding with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble wool dye containing at least 1% by weight of an alkali metal dodecylbenzene sulphonate and at least 1% by weight of a condensate of ethylene oxide with an alkyl phenol and thereafter steamed. The condensate may contain 5-15, preferably 7.5-10 moles ethylene oxide and the alkyl radical or radicals may contain 5-12, preferably 8 or 9 C atoms. The padding solution may also contain a thickener urea and an acid or acid salt. The dyes may be anthroquinone or azo dyes, 1:1- or 1:2-metal complex monoazo dyes containing up to 2 -SO3H groups, reactive or mordant dyes.
