In order to reduce the costs of a locking unit for a motor vehicle roll bar which is extended in a crash, the ratchets used in the assembly should have a sandwich construction and subassemblies which can be pre-assembled should be realized. The sandwich of said ratchets (3) consists of several flat parts stamped from sheet- steel. Said parts are interconnected in such a way that they have a positive form fit or a positive material fit, thus producing perfectly joined ratchets. The spring block, which consists of spiral springs and a plastic absorbing and securing element, is defined as a subassembly which can be pre-assembled. This subassembly can be quickly pre-assembled with few manual operations, and after pre-assembly can be built into the assembly of the locking unit with a single manual operation. Both of the measures described are aimed at reducing material and manufacturing costs.
