An estimate of the air mass flow in the engine cylinder is derived from a physical model of he induction tract depending on the revolution rate, the degree of choke flap (20) opening and the estimate of the charging pressure. A control signal for controlling the control element is determined depending on the estimate of the air mass flow in the cylinder (30).
