A dual speed fishing reel having a housing (14), a spool (11) on a spool shaft (12), a low and a high speed pinion (44, 45), a drive shaft (48), a low speed drive gear (46) engaging the low speed pinion and a high speed drive gear (47) engaging the high speed pinion. One of the drive gears is fixed to the drive shaft for rotation, and the other of the drive gears rides on the drive shaft independent of rotation thereof. A gear shift (55) moves the low speed drive gear into and out of engagement with the high speed drive gear. First and second braking surfaces are engaged by first and second brake pads (30, 37). The first brake pad is mounted for translation with the spool shaft. The second brake pad is axially moveable relative to the spool shaft. The spool shaft translates to bring the brake pads and surfaces into engagement. In one embodiment the spool shaft rotates and in a second embodiment the spool shaft does not rotate.
