Caustifying woven polyester fabric

A process for caustifying woven polyester fabric comprises discontinuous treatment of the fabric for 40 minutes, preferably at 110 deg C, with a solution containing sodium hydroxide solution (50 deg Be), preferably in an amount of 17.1 ml/l, together with 2 ml/l of a surfactant to promote the absorption of NaOH and 2 ml/l of a conventional catalyst for partial degradation of the polyester.
