The invention relates to a hard metal or cermet sintered body consisting of at least one solid phase containing WC and a binder phase in addition to inserted WC platelets, said body being at least temporarily sintered by direct microwave irradiation. The invention further relates to a method for producing said body, wherein the materials required to form the phases and platelets are in each case precompressed in powder form and subsequently undergo reactive sintering in a 0.01-10 W/cm<3> energy density microwave field.
