A method for making an ambipolar membrane, wherein a monomer selected from haloalkylstyrenes and nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds including an alkenyl radical is grafted onto a fraction of the thickness of a sheet of polymeric material, which is then treated to form quaternary ammonium radicals thereon, and a monomer including at least one aryl radical to which functional groupings derived from sulphonic, carboxylic or phosphonic acid are attached is grafted onto another fraction of the thickness of said sheet. |
