<PICT:1124093/C2/1> An antibiotic, copiamycin, has the anti-fungal spectrum shown in the Specification in Tables 3 and 4; forms colourless plateless, M.P. 144 DEG C.; specific rotation [a ]D25.5 = 14.4; elemental analysis C=58.30%, H=8.90% and N=3.94%; very soluble in pyridine, dimethylformamide, glacial acetic acid; moderately soluble in CH3OH, C2H5OH, n-butanol; insoluble in acetone, dioxane, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride esters, petroleum ether, benzene, methyl isobutyl ketone and water; no U.V. absorption above 210 mm ; I.R. (Fig. 2) and has R.F. valves shown in Table 1 (not shown). Copiamycin is produced by cultivating a copiamycin-producing strain of Streptomyces hygroscopicus, e.g. S. hygroscopicus var. crystallogenes ATCC 19040, in an aqueous nutrient medium. Copiamycin is recovered from (a) whole broth by extraction with n-butanol, (b) separated mycelium by extraction with a C1- 5 alcohol especially CH3OH, followed by precipitation by the addition of acetone. Further purification is by chromatography on silica gel using as solvent chloroform and methanol (3:1), followed by crystallization from solvents, especially methanol.
