<p>A static seal assembly (10) comprises an underwater cable (12) having: (a) an outer jacket (14); (b) a metal housing (16) provided with annular grooves (26) containing O-rings (28) or similar seal members, encompassed by a rigid shell (30); and overmoulded by (c) a cover (34), which also has an integral shoulder (38) formed during moulding to fill an annular groove (36) provided in the metal housing (16) for that purpose. The rigid shell (30) is formed of glass-filled polyurethane having a flexural modulus of about 650,000 psi, a surface hardness of about 80 D, and a thickness of 0.15-0.20 inches. The material is self-bonding with the overmoulded cover (34), which is also composed of polyurethane, as is the outer jacket (14). Alternatively, the rigid shell (30), overmoulded cover (34), and cable jacket (14) are all formed of polyethylene or nylon.</p> |
