A repeater 14 for a computer network, and a network incorporating such a repeater are described in which repeater communication addressed to a subset of the devices connected to the repeater (M1,M2,M3) are transmitted in a corrupt or scrambled form to other network devices. The processing load is thus reduced for such other network devices, in particular in the context of high volume multicast traffic such as in video conferencing. Address table 144 uses a bit mask to store the required operation in respect of each port A,B,C,D,E of repeater 14 for possible multicast addresses M1 (ports B,D,E), M2 (ports B,C,E) and M3 (ports C,D,E). Scrambling mechanism 146 functions on the basis of the bit mask supplied from table 144 in conjunction with repeater core 142. |
