A multichannel wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communication system comprises a source of optical solitons of selected wavelength (120), a multiplexer for separating a plurality of trains of solitons from the source (102), a plurality of wavelength shifters (104), a plurality of amplitude modulators (106), a demultiplexer means for combining the individually modulated wavelengths (107) for feeding into an optical fibre (108), a wavelength dispersive means (110) for receiving the WDM solitons, and a plurality of detectors (112) for detecting the modulated signal from each individual wavelength component. The wavelength shifting means are preferably implemented using a travelling waveguided optical pulse in which mismatch between the velocity of the guided light wave and a microwave modulation signal is compensated for by periodically altering the electrode position in relation to the optical guide (see fig. 2a). |
