Cationic thiadiazole azo dyes of formula (I) are new: R1 and R2 = H, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or, opt. attached via (m)ethylene, heterocyclyl, or together they complete a heterocycle; R3 = alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl; R4 and R5 = H, alkyl, alkoxy or halo; R6 = H, alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, Ra-amino, halo, CN, alkoxycarbonyl or NO2, or R5 and R6 together complete fused benzo; Ra = aryl, alkanoyl, aroyl, alkylsulphonyl, alkoxycarbonyl or alkylaminocarbonyl; R7 = H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or aryl; R8 and R9 are as R4 and R5; Z = bivalent bridging gp.; X = anion; all alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkoxy or heterocyclyl may be substd. by nonionic gps., COOH, ammonium or pyridinium. Also new are the anhydrobases of formula (IV).
