Biphenylamido derivatives as melatonergic agents

There is provided novel biphenylamido derivatives of the formula <IMAGE> I wherein Z is <IMAGE> and Y is H or Z is H and Y is <IMAGE> n is 0 or 1; R is C1-6 alkyl; R1 is C1-3 alkyl, C3-6 cycloalkyl, C1-4 alkoxymethyl, or NHR2; and R2 is C1-3 alkyl or cyclopropyl which are melatonergic agents and are useful in the treatment of circadian rhythm-related disorders and other conditions affected by melatonin activity.
