A method of preventing renal failure or dysfunction caused by medical tests which utilize contrast media by administering, preferably by intravenous infusion or injection, a prostaglandin selected from PGE1, PGE2, PGI2 or an analog or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof and preferably in a form of a complex with alpha -cyclodextrin, to a patient at risk, for example, a diabetic.
