In a paper-making machine having a Fourdinier wire with a soldered seam composed of a noble metal - for example a gold or silver alloy - a rail or rod is disposed transversely of, and adjacent to, the wire, is electrically connected to the screen and is more electro-positive than the screen so that in an electro-chemical reaction between the rail, the screen, the seam as a cathode, and the screen water as an electrolyte, the rail acts as an anode and disolves away instead of the screen. The rail, which may be of zinc or magnesium, with the screen being of stainless steel, bronze or a copper-based zinc alloy, has a member in sliding contact with either the screen directly or with the shaft of an idler roller of the screen. There may be a plurality of rails. A battery may be inserted in the connection between the rail and screen to increase the potential of the rail over that of the screen. |
