Analogue or digital information (33) enters a signal splitter (34). Part of its content and/or synchronization or other control information is separated (35) and encoded (37). Coded (38) and un-coded (36) information are combined at the multiplexer (39) and transmitted (40). The reverse process takes place at the receive end, with the original signal being reconstructed in the combiner (46). Instead of discretely coding the relevant part of the signal, it could be sent via a separate secure Code Division Multiple Access channel. Without the coded information, the remainder of the signal is unusable if intercepted by a third party.
