Gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide is made by introducing a jet of liquid hydrocarbon oil into a cocurrent convergent annular stream of a gas containing oxygen and steam and immediately passing the dispersion of fuel droplets formed into a reaction zone to effect partial oxidation at 1800-3500‹ F. Fuel droplets of average diameter 25Á are formed by discharging the gas, preheated to 500‹ F., in the form of a hollow cone of angle 30-45 degrees with a velocity relative to the fuel stream of above 200 f.p.s. The burner assembly has a tip B through the inner conduit of which the preheated hydrocarbon fuel is passed whilst the atomizing gas is passed through the annular passage 14, 15. The inner conduit 10 and the outer casing 13 are held in position by the lugs 17 and 18 and the spacers 19 so that the annular passage 14, 15 tapers to the end 14 so as to provide for greater gas velocity for the atomization.</p> |
