[Also in Divisions C1 and H1] A magnetic Co alloy has the formula M 5 R where M is Co or a combination of Co with one or more of Fe, Cu, Ni, and R is La, Th, a combination of Th with one or more rare earth metals, or a combination of at least 3 rare earth metals, and has a hexagonal crystal structure and a particle size of less than 100 microns. The alloy is made by melting the components M and R, cooling, annealing in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, e. g. at 900-1100‹ C. in Ar, cooling to room temperature, e. g. by quenching pulversing, and optionally baking. Alloys expemplified are: Co 5 La Co 5 Th Co 4 Cu La Co 3 Fe 2 Th Co 5 Th o . 2 Yo.8 Co 5 La 0À33 Sm 0À33 Th 0À34 Co 5 La 0À5 Ce 0À25 Sm 0À25 It is also stated that if M is Co + Fe, when R is La the maximum Fe content is 5 at. per cent, and when R is Th it is 60 at. per cent.</p> |
