A lactic ferment comprises a dried whole culture of antibiotic-resistant lactic bacteria which have been killed prior to the drying of the culture. Strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus lactis and/or Lactobacillus bulgericus resistant to tetracycline, oxytetracyline or chloramphenicol are aerosically cultivated at 28‹-40‹C in a medium containing polypeptides and essential amino acids (liver extract and peptones), precursors of the Vitamin B complex (liver extract) and sugars (lactose or dry milk powder) until the concentration of bacteria reaches 10.5<SP>7</SP> per milli litre, the bacterial cultures are combined (where appropriate) and neutralized to pH 6.5, the bacteria are killed, and the whole culture is concentrated to a syrup and is then dried by lyophilisation or desiccation. The dried whole culture is compounded with an antibiotic (tetracycline, oxytetracycline or chloramphenicol) or sulphonamide (sulphaguanidine) and a pharmaceutical carrier, and these are put up in the form of a powder, granules, tablets, capsules or dilutable suspension.</p> |
