PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain the subject compound useful e.g. as a component of bathing agent and cosmetic in high yield by treating a 2-alkylbenzoic acid with a microorganism having asymmetric hydroxylation potency and carrying out intramolecular esterification of the resultant product. SOLUTION: A 2-alkylbenzoic acid expressed by the formula I (R<1> is a linear or branched-chain alkyl or alkenyl; R<2> is H, an alkyl, an alkenyl or an aryl) is treated with a microorganism having asymmetric hydroxylation potency such a Pseudomonas putida ATCC12633, Aspergillus niger IFO 4091 or Aspergillus niger IFO 6661 and the resultant product is subjected to intermolecular esterification to easily obtain the objective optically active 3- substituted phthalide expressed by the formula II ((*) shows that the steric configuration of the position is S or R) and useful as a component of a bathing agent or a cosmetic in high yield. |
