PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To orient and tilt a liquid crystal by using circularly polarized light without a rubbing process by irradiating a polymer thin film containing an optically active compd. formed on a substrate with circularly polarized light to tilt and orient the optically active compd. SOLUTION: A polymer thin film as an orienting film containing an azo pigment as an optically active compd., and polyvinylalcohol PVA containing Methyl Orange MO are applied on each of upper and lower substrates 11, 13. After the polymer orienting films 12, 14 are formed on the upper and lower substrates 11, 13, respectively, each polymer thin film is irradiated with light to tilt and orient Methyl Orange in the polymer thin film by a specified angle. In this case, the light to tilt and orient the liquid crystal by a specified angle is circularly polarized light. The upper and lower substrates 11, 12 are transparent glass substrates. Then the upper and lower substrates 11, 12 are held at a specified distance by using a spacer and sealed, and a liquid crystal is injected into the space between the substrates. In this process, the liquid crystal is tilted and oriented while giving a specified pretilt angle by the circularly polarized light. |
