PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate a cost increase accompanying the remodeling of an installation, when a base material is elongated. SOLUTION: This device for feeding a base material for an optical fiber comprises a driving device 16 for moving the base material 13 for the optical fiber, a chuck 22 capable of being detachably connected to the upper end of the base material 13 for the optical fiber and to the upper end of a support bar 15, a temporary support means 24 for temporarily supporting the upper end of the base material 13 for the optical fiber so that the upper end of the base material for the optical fiber is projected from the upper end of an oven 12, and a connecting means for capable of detachably connecting the upper end of the base material 134 for the optical fiber to the lower end of the support bar 15. The method for feeding the base material for the optical fiber comprises temporarily supporting the upper end of the base material 13 projected from the upper end of the oven 12, connecting the lower end of the support bar 15 to the upper end of the base material 13, connecting the upper end of the support bar 15 to the chuck 22 to release the temporarily supporting state, and subsequently feeding the base material 13 into the oven 12 by the use of the driving device 16. |
