PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a side guide coexist with a radiation thermometer by a method wherein a temperature minimum point is detected in temperature information near one end of a flange and its position is specified as one end part of the flange. SOLUTION: A side guide 5 prevents the deflection in the transverse direction of a wide- flange shape steel 3 and a scanning radiation thermometer 8 is arranged in a position which exceeds one end 6a of a flange 6 and which puts a flange 7 into a visual field. On the basis of obtained temperature information, a discrimination means 9 discriminates ehe end part of the flange 6 from the end part of a flange 7. That is to say, on the basis of a scanning angleθ1 which is formed by the other end point E1 of the flange 6 specified in the temperature measurement of the radiation thermometer 8 and by the optical axis R of the radiation thermometer 8 and on the basis of the vertical distance H1 between both, a distance L is found, and a scanning angle 2 which is formed by the other end point E1 and by a part near one end 6a is computed by the distance and by the flange width W of a finished product. On the basis of the scanning angleθ2 , a temperature minimum point near one end 6a is extracted by anticipating any thermal expansion on the basis of a temperature information group, and one end E2 is specified. Thereby, the boundary between both flanges can be specified, the arrangement position of the radiation thermometer 8 is made free, and the radiation thermometer can coexist with the side guide 5.
