PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a sound spray layer by specifying the quantity of excess combustion supporting gas per unit hour and the heat generation of a combustible supply gas per unit weight of refractory powder thereby accelerating complete combustion of combustible gas and melting a spray material sufficiently while ensuring total heat generation. SOLUTION: A relationship Y>=10000-100.X is set between the quantity of excess combustion supporting gas×(Nm/h) and the heat generation of a combustible gas per 1kg of refractory powder Y (kcal/kg powder/h). For example, a spray material of 80% silica and 20% metal silica is sprayed using a combustible gas of propane and a combustion supporting gas of oxygen. A spray layer thus produced has excellent compression strength in the region of Y>=10000-100.X where the spray material is fused sufficiently. According to the method, combustible gas in the spray material is burnt completely, oxidation of metal powder is accelerated, the spray material is fused sufficiently and a sound spray layer can be formed efficiently.
