PROCESS FOR THE BACK SIDE COATING OF METAL COMPONENTS AND PRODUCT PRODUCED THEREFROM

A method for coating a metal article with a corrosion-resistant material in preparation for plating with a metallic element and a product produced by such a method. The method provides a corrosion-resistant coating on a metal article such as a metal blank prior to the blank being formed and plated to produce a bumper or bumper accessory for a vehicle. The method includes the general steps of cleaning the metal article, pretreating the metal article with a pretreatment material such as chromic phosphate, ferrous phosphate, or zinc phosphate, sealing the pretreated article, and painting the cleaned, pretreated, and sealed blank. The paint used is preferably a powder paint. After the article is painted, it may subsequently be formed into a desired shape and be thereafter plated using a metallic plating element such as chrome. The coating applied according to the present method is sufficiently enduring such that it is only necessary for the plating to be applied to the exposed or outer surface of the component for the sake of aesthetics. The unseen side of the component may be left unplated, and reliance may be fully made upon the coating for the resistance of corrosion to the metal article.
