PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To access the information stored in a data base via a computer system by receiving a file system request corresponding to an available file system object from an application and transforming the system request into a data base operation. SOLUTION: An IXFS 300 is positioned between a data base unaware application 302 and a data base 304, and the application 302 monitors all requests given to a file system 306. When the application 302 seeks to access the information stored in the base 304, the component element of an IXFS system transforms a file system request into a data base inquiry format than can be understood by the base 304. In the same way, the information received from the base 304 is shown to the application 302 as one or more file system objects.
