The pile of a tufted carpet consists of crimpable and non-crimpable synthetic filaments, the pile yarn being formed either by extruding the two kinds of filament through different orifices of the same spinneret or by plying together a yarn of one kind with a yarn of the other kind. The crimpable filaments are conjugate, consisting of two polymers extruded side-by-side or as a sheath-and-core through the same orifice. Both kinds of filament may be trilobal. The crimp is developed after, or partly before and partly after, tufting, whereby the uncrimped filaments form loops on the surface of the crimped pile.</p> |
