PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce sticking phenomenon due to difference in layer structure by placing an arbitrary pixel forcibly in a specific display state in a nonselection period. SOLUTION: A scanning period includes a selection period wherein a voltage for determining the quantity of transmitted light of a pixel is applied and the nonselection period wherein the quantity of transmitted light determined in the selection period is held and an arbitrary pixel is placed forcibly in a specific display state during the nonselection period. In this case, a display data modifying circuit is constituted between a display data generating circuit and a signal- side voltage waveform generating circuit. One scanning period is, for example, approximately 17ms and a display data converting circuit changes display data forcibly into a white display (bookshelf structure) in the same cycles with display cycles (approximately 35μs). The number of pixels which are changed in one cycle is 100,000 and the pixels which are changed in the modification cycle are extracted at random, all pixels are displayed in white core in every approximately 544ms on average irrelevantly to the display data.
