MPEG encoding and decoding system for multimedia

The system includes a coder (68) which compresses multimedia data. A processor (58) is connected to the coder which arranges the data to a variable-length block. A decoder (74) decompresses the compressed data. Preferably, the coder and decoder use an algorithm of the Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG) for the compression and decompression. A buffer (70) is connected to the coder and stores the blocks of compressed multimedia data. An address generator reacts on the instruction of the processor which indicates the length of a block and generates address data to store the blocks in the buffer.
