In the manufacture of a thin film store comprising an area of thin film on a substrate provided with a plurality of spaced-apart notches, magnetic switch cores threaded on a conductor which is wrapped around the substrate, are located in the notches, electrically conductive connections being made between turns of the conductor to form a plurality of conductor loops each coupled to a respective core and to the film area. A thin film plane 1 comprising thin film 3 on a substrate 2 provided with notches 4 along one edge arranged at 45 degrees to the faces of the substrate is supported by chucks 10, 11 in a conventional coil winding machine. In operation conductor 20 is secured to the back of the substrate 2 which is then rotated to wind on a few turns of conductor and then positioned with the notched edge uppermost, being rotated slightly past the point at which it extends from the end of tube 23 supporting the conductor and carrying cores 22. Block 18 is then moved to the right causing fork-shaped member 27 to move relative to the conductor 20 so that core 22 supported thereby falls towards the notches 4. Rotation of the substrate is resumed and the block 18 is moved back to its normal position on carriage 14 which action causes the core 22 to be engaged with a notch 4. During the second half of each revolution of the substrate escapement mechanism including arms 24, 25 is operated to release a further core to member 27. Carriage 14 is advanced during rotation of the substrate by means of leadscrew 16. At the end of the winding process the winding is formed into a plurality of separate loops by soldering all the loops to a conductive strip laid along the lower edge of the substrate, Fig. 2 (not shown), the loops forming word drive conductors. The substrates 2 may be held in back-to-back relationship and if they are not electrically conductive a foil layer may be introduced between the substrates of each pair. A serpentine digit conductor formation may be interlaced through an assembly of substrates. Instead of milling the notches 4 in the substrate they may be preformed in strips which are subsequently attached to the substrates. If a two core per bit arrangement is employed a switch core 22 is dropped from the member 27 every two complete revolutions of the substrate 2. Two or more conductors 20 may be wound concurrently.
