PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carrier for an electrophotographic developer having satisfactory electrostatic chargeability, excellent in environmental stability, also having satisfactory durability and ensuring stable superior image quality by specifying the atomic ratio of N to a metal in the surface layer of a carrier. SOLUTION: This carrier contains at least N and at least one kind of metal selected from among Ca, Mg, Mn, Li, Sr, Al and Bi and the atomic ratio of N to the metal in the surface layer is 1-50at.%, preferably 5-30at.%. Ferrite may be used as this carrier. The surface compsn. can be controlled by using a coating agent contg. the selected metal and N.
