Vinyl and vinylidene halide resin compositions are stabilized with compositions comprising by weight (a) a mixture of 20 to 45 parts barium salts and 10 to 65 parts cadmium salts which contains at least one salt having an aromatic anion and at least one salt having an aliphatic anion, (b) 5 to 20 parts of a phenolic compound and (c) 5 to 20 parts of a polyhydric alcohol selected from pentaerythritol, sorbitol, mannitol, methyl glucoside and styrene/allyl alcohol copolymers containing 5to 10 units of each monomer. The stabilizers may also contain zinc salts of organic acids; organic phosphites and epoxidized oils, e.g. epoxidized soya bean and tall oils; dyes; pigments; extenders; solvents and plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate, tricresyl phosphate and octyl diphenyl phosphate. Specified resins are polymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, vinyl fluoride and vinylidene chloride, and copolymers thereof with vinyl esters, styrene and methacrylic, fumaric and maleic esters, and mixtures of such polymers with chlorinated polyethylene, polyacrylates, polymethactylates and copolymers of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. In examples polyvinyl chloride is stabilized with compositions comprising barium myristate and cadmium benzoate together with (1) pentaerythritol and bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, 4,41 - thio bis - (3 - methyl - 6 - t - butylphenol), phenyl salicylate, p.t.octylphenol, propyl phydroxybenzoate or salicylic acid, or bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane with sorbitol, methyl glucoside, mannitol or a styrene/allyl alcohol copolymer; (2) bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane and isoctyl diphenyl phosphite with pentaerythritol or sorbitol; (3) bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, isooctyl diphenyl phosphite and sorbitol; (4) phenyl salicylate, sorbitol, an acrylic polymer, decyl diphenyl phosphite and a condensate of epichlorhydrin and bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane; (5) 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone and bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane with pentaerythritol or sorbitol, or phenyl salicylate with pentaerythritol; (6) dioctyl phthalate, epoxidized soya bean oil, pentaerythritol, bis - (4 - hydroxy - phenyl) propane and zinc benzoate or stearate; (7) dioctyl phthalate, isooctyl epoxytallate, stearic acid, decyl diphenyl phosphite, pentaerythritol, bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane and zinc benzoate or stearate; and (8) dioctyl phthalate, isooctyl epoxytallate, stearic acid, decyl diphenyl phosphite, barium nonylphenolate, cadmium 2 - ethylhexoate, zinc 2-ethyl hexoate, pentaerythritol, bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane and zinc stearate or benzoate. |
