A device for determining physical characteristics of a liquid in a storage container, comprising a probe operably located within the liquid and comprising a level sensor (30) for determining the position of the interface between the liquid and another fluid, and preferably a temperature sensor (70) positioned proximal with the level sensor. Also, a device for determining physical characteristics of a liquid, particularly an explosive liquid, in a storage container, comprising a probe (24) operably located in the liquid, and means for preventing ingress of liquid into the probe whilst allowing electrical connection (28) to a sensor (30, 32) within the probe, wherein the ingress preventing means comprises a substrate (130) having electrically conductive tracks (132) thereon means (134) for sealing the substrate within the probe.
