The invention concerns a device for limiting the insertion thickness of a document (2) such as a ticket, card, in any machine, located behind an input slot (5) of an insertion chute (1) comprising at least a front wall (3) and a plane support (4) receiving the document (2) to be inserted. The invention is characterised in that it comprises a cam (6) including a rotation axis (7) of which each end is mounted in a fixed guide slide (12), said cam (6) being subjected to the force Fr of a return spring (15) generating a force thrusting the cam towards said plane support (4) and pressing it against this plane support, when no document (2) is passing through, along a generatrix (34) of the cam parallel to the rotation axis and substantially perpendicular to the direction (20) in which said document is inserted, and on the other hand, relative to said axis, a torque pressing the cam with a force Fa against a fixed support stop (19) preventing the cam from rotating in the direction corresponding to the torque generated by the insertion force of a document (2) in said chute between the plane support (4) and said cam (6), the cam rotation being free in the opposite direction, said cam rotation axis (7) being free to slide in said slides (12) countering said force F, such sliding bringing about a passage clearance j between said plane support and the cam, means (22, 23) being provided for limiting this free sliding to restrict this clearance j to a predetermined value, and further characterised in that the profile (35) of the cam section by a plane perpendicular to said axis is such that the cam rotation in the opposite direction brings about between said cam (6) and said plane support (4) a clearance j1, much greater than said clearance j.
