Closed cavity liquid crystal cell comprises: (a) a first substrate, having an insulator on which a number of cavities are placed, with an electrode layer on one side of the insulator layer; (b) a second substrate, placed on the other side of the substrate, having a second electrode layer formed on it, near the insulator layer; and (c) liquid crystal material, filled into the cavities in the insulator layer, where the electrodes are used to drive and vary the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules. Also claimed is a method of forming the above liquid crystal cell. The cell further comprises polarisers on the other sides of the substrates, a reflector, and a compensator between the second polariser and the second substrate. The compensator is made of optically uniaxial materials with negative birefringence. The insulator is either oxide or nitride or both, or is a polymer. |
