[Also in Division F4] A press-section of a paper making machine comprises an upper roll 3, a lower perforated roll 4 having a suction box 14 with a central compartment 16 extending forwardly and rearwardly of the nip and with compartments 15 and 17 respectively forward and rearward of compartment 16, an endless bottom carrier 7 covering roll 3 over at least the arc of compartment 16, and means to guide the paper web into the nip clear of carrier 7 until compartment 16 is reached. There is a high vacuum in compartment 16, and a low one in compartments 15 and/or 17 if the compartment or compartments are covered by carrier 7. A second carrier 19, Figs. 5-8 (not shown), of openwork character and comprising a woven fabric of wire or of substantially non-absorbent threads or filaments of plastics material, or a perforated rubber sheet, may be inserted between carrier 7 and roll 4 so that it is in contact with the roll over the entire arc of compartments 15-17. Carrier 19 may pass around another suction roll. Roll 4 has a rubber cover 12 over its metal shell while top roll 3 may be plain or may have a suction box,or it may be a porous roll. |
