PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrict a rush current peak value for a lamp, when started, with the lower inductance of a pulse transformer in a starting circuit to generate high voltage pulse, avoid dangerous breakage of the lamp and ensure operation of the short-arc-type high pressure discharge lamp in a smaller circuit structure. SOLUTION: The secondary side open voltage of a lighting power supply circuit 12 or a smoothing circuit 18 is set to be lower, not exceeding 2.5 times the maximum output voltage of a lamp, when lit, so that the maximum rush current in the lamp, when started, can be also lower to avoid dangerous breakage of the lamp even if the inductance of the secondary side winding N2 of a pulse transformer Pt in a starting circuit 13 is smaller, 100μH or less. |
