A process for forming a structurally robust optical coating on a substrate comprises: (a) epitaxially growing first and second compounds with different indexes of refraction on a substrate; and (b) promoting the formation of dislocations within the resultant coating to prevent it from cracking during cooling. Also claimed is a similar process where the two compounds have different thermal expansion coefficients. Further claimed is a process for depositing an optical coating of germanium and strontium fluoride on a substrate according to the above process. |
