The cell is a lead acid cell formed by an electrolyte impregnated separator sandwiched between plate electrodes (2). Its case has a shallow, especially rectangular, insulating frame, sealed between insulating face plates (1) which closely contact the electrodes. External connections are made through conducting buttons (3), fixed in central face plate apertures, which normally contact the underlying electrodes. Each aperture (40c) is formed in a central web which separates circular recesses mutually aligned either side of the face plate. A three layer plate may be used. Half buttons (31,32), which are pressed into the opposing recess, press fit into each other in the aperture. Any excess internal pressure, such as that due to a short circuit, deforms the face plates, breaking the circuit. In extreme cases, the aperture widens to form a relief vent. |
