Method and device for determining the valley contours of a given geographic area

The method involves a processing and cartographic visualisation unit (2) receiving data files through a link (8). This unit determines the probable hydrographic system for the geographic zone. A second unit (3) uses the same link to assign altitudes to each point in the zone. Tributaries and confluences of the hydrographic system are identified (4) and valley points likely to belong to valley contours are determined (5) from the first and second matrices. Segments of valley contours are defined (6) from the valley points and the tributaries and confluences and further processing (7) produces the full valley contours from the segments.
