Method for detecting level contours in two stereoscopic images

The method involves the following stages. First calculating a numerical model of the landscape from two independent stereoscopic pictures (1). Then, the numerical model is used to calculate crest lines indicating maximum curvature (2). The crest lines obtained are projected onto the stereoscopic images (3). Segments of contours are extracted from the stereoscopic images using chainage and polygonisation (4). This operation does not necessarily follow the previous stages in sequence. Contours corresponding to crest lines according to affinity criteria are identified (5), and contours corresponding to a particular crest line may be replaced by an average contour (6).
