PROCESS FOR CLEANING GAS CONTAINING COMBUSTIBLE COMPONENTS, E.G. CARBON DIOXIDE AND SULPHUR COMPOUNDS

Waste gas rich in hydrogen sulphide from the heat regeneration is partially burnt in a combustion chamber with oxygen, oxygen-containing gas or air. A gas mixture having a temperature from 1000 to 2000°C is produced in the chamber. The gas mixture contains, as elementary sulphur, at least 30 percent mol of the sulphur fed to the combustion chamber and the components hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide in the molar ratio from 4:1 to 1:1. The gas mixture is cooled to below the dewpoint of sulphur. Elementary sulphur condensing out is separated off and the gas mixture is heated to temperatures of 180 to 280°C, prior to subjecting it to a catalytic hydrogenation or hydrolysis. The remaining content of sulphur dioxide is substantially converted into hydrogen sulphid. At least a part of the gas thus treated is, as hydrogen sulphid-containing residual gas, contacted with scrubbing solution.
