PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cross-linked polyethylene which has a specified loss modulus, is excellent in withstand voltage characteristics, and is useful for decreasing the thickness of the insulating layer of a power cable by cross-linking a specific low-density polyethylene with a specific cross-linker under specified conditions. SOLUTION: This cross-linked polyethylene has a loss modulus of 5×10<7> -1×10<9> dyn/cm<2> and is produced by mixing 100 pts.wt. low-density polyethylene having a melt flow rate of 0.1-1.0g/10min with 1.0-3.0 pts.wt. cross-linker at 40-80 deg.C and cross-linking the resultant mixture at 160-240 deg.C. Any cross-linker of a low-temp. decomposition type or of a high-temp. decomposition type can be used. An example of the low-temp. decomposition type is dicumyl peroxide, and examples of the high-temp. decomposition type are 1,3-bis(t- butylperoxyisopropyl)benzene and 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy)hexyne-3.
