PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject derivative useful e.g. as an intermediate for a tetracyanoquinodimethane derivative usable in the field of electrically conductive organic material in high efficiency, purity and yield with a simple operation by reacting an arene compound with iodine monochloride in an alcohol. SOLUTION: A polyiodoarene derivative is produced by reacting an arene compound such as a benzene derivative with iodine monochloride in an alcohol. Preferably a diiodobenzene of the formula (R1 and R2 are each a substituent provided that the sum of theσρvalue of the Hammett's rule of R1 and R2 is <=0) is produced by reacting a 1,4-disubstituted benzene in a manner similar to the above reaction. The substituents R1 and R2 are preferably alkoxy groups.
