PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., in a high purity and in a high yield by catalytically hydrogenating a specific glycidyl compound in an organic solvent. SOLUTION: A glycidyl compound of formula I [X is a sulfonyloxy of the formula: RSO2 -O (R is a 1-4C alkyl, an aryl)] or formula II (Y is a halogen, the sulfonyloxy of the formula: RSO2 -O) is catalytically hydrogenated in an organic solvent (preferably an alcoholic solvent or an ester solvent) to produce the 1-substituted-2-propanol derivative of formula III or formula IV. A catalyst used for the catalytic hydrogenation reaction is preferably palladium carbon. In the method, when an optically active glycidly compound is used as a raw material, the optically active 1-substituted-2-propanol derivative can be obtained substantially without lowering the optical purity of the derivative. |
