PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in a high yield without formation of by-product and decomposition product by allowing hypohalite to react with a specific alcohol in the presence of a pyridine in an organic solvent, as the pH of the reaction mixture is controlled within a specific range. SOLUTION: (A) An alcohol of formula I (R1 and R3 are independently from each other H, a halogen, a lower alkyl, benzyl, methoxy) is oxidized with (B) a hypohalite of the formula: M(O-X)n [m is an alkali or alkaline earth metal; X is a halogen; n is 1, when M is an alkali metal, while 2 in the case M is an alkaline earth metal] in the presence of a pyridine in a solvent, as the reaction mixture is controlled in its pH to 7-9 whereby (C) a ketone of formula II is obtained. As a alkaline pH regulator for controlling the pH, is used a hypohalite, while a mineral acid or organic acid is preferably used as an acidic pH regulator. |
