PRODUCTION OF FUNCTIONAL FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a functional fiber excellent in washing durability by introducing a functionality imparter through communicating holes communicating from the fiber surface to a hollow part into the hollow part, then introducing a monomer containing a polymerization initiator thereinto and polymerizing the monomer. SOLUTION: The alkali weight reduction treatment of a tricot fabric composed of a multifilament yarn of polyester hollow fibers is carried out to form many communicating holes communicating from the fiber surface to the hollow part. The resultant fabric is then placed in a hermetically sealed container and kept in a vacuum state. An unpolymerizable functionality imparter for the fiber such as a natural plant extract essence-based deodorant is injected and introduced through the communicating holes into the hollow part. A monomer such as an acrylic or a methacrylic acid derivative containing a polymerization initiator such as potassium persulfate is subsequently introduced into the hollow part in the same manner as that described above and the monomer sticking to the fiber surface is then substantially removed with a solvent, containing a polymerization inhibitor or a soaping agent and capable of dissolving the monomer. The monomer introduced into the hollow part is then polymerized to form a functional fiber.
