PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially advantageously obtain the subject compound by reacting (meth)acrylic acid with an alkylene oxide while adding a diester formation preventive agent under specified conditions. SOLUTION: This compound is obtained by reacting (meth)acrylic acid with an alkylene oxide in an amount of equimolar or more to the (meth)acrylic acid in the presence of a catalyst such as iron powder at 0.01-10wt.% based on the (meth)acrylic acid at 40-130 deg.C, under pressure in a liquid state, by adding a sum of 0.1-10 moles of a diester formation preventive agent such as oxalic acid or glycerol per mole of the catalyst, with the concentration of the alkylene oxide in the reaction being 10% or lower, and then by maintaining the concentration of the alkylene oxide in the reaction at 10% or lower in the presence of the above agent, so as to effectively prevent the formation of diester as a byproduct. |
