PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain magnesia-carbon castable refractories having satisfactory flowability with a small amt. of water added, less liable to the infiltration of slag and having superior durability by adding a specified amt. of condensed ammonium naphthalenesulfonate as a deflocculant to castable refractories contg. carbon and magnesia as principal components. SOLUTION: Condensed ammonium naphthalenesulfonate is added as a deflocculant by 0.01-0.5wt.%. It has satisfactory wettability with carbon, especially carbon black, pitch powder, coke breeze and graphite and is excellent in deflocculating performance even in a large amt. of basic starting material such as magnesia. Since the deflocculant is used, problems such as inferior flowability of castable refractories, low physical properties of castings and a large amt. of water to be added can be solved. |
